The term "epigenetics" describes heritable genetic modifications that are not attributable to changes in the primary DNA sequence. There are three inter-related forms of epigenetic inheritance; genomic imprinting, DNA methylation, and histone modification. Methods for detecting and characterizing epigenetic events are rapidly evolving as new technologies become available. Different technologies may be employed at different stages in a project depending on the experimental objective.
